On September 18, Minister of Sports and Tourism of Belarus Sergei Kovalchuk signed amendments to the order “On contracts” dated January 20, 2020 No. 20, which immediately caused a great resonance among Belarusian public. Some controversial points, such as the prohibition for athletes to use any symbols, except for the official state symbols, during the competition and the prohibition of communication with the media without the prior permission of the employer of the athletes paid special attention.
Attorney Aliaksandr Danilevich commented on these amendments from a legal point of view in an article that was published on the website “Tribuna”. There the author expressed his expert opinion on the compliance of this legal act with legislation, in particular, with the Constitution, and answered some topical questions: how legitimate are the points spelled out in the minister’s new order? Does the athlete have the right not to sign an additional agreement to the contract and what consequences await in case of refusal?
